What it is

Director Appointment, explained in plain English.

Adding a director means formally appointing an individual to the board of a company under Sections 152 / 161 of the Companies Act, 2013. The appointment is effective from the date of the board (or general) meeting and must be filed in Form DIR-12 within 30 days. New directors without a DIN need one allotted via Form DIR-3, while LLPs use Form 4 instead.

TL;DR

Get a DIN, pass a board resolution, take DIR-2 consent and DIR-8 declaration, file DIR-12 within 30 days. Miss the window and the penalty is Rs 100 per day with no cap.
